HOW IT WAS LIT: JULIE MINTZ

Posted by on Jun 17, 2011 in HOW IT WAS LIT, TIPS & TUTORIALS | 3 comments

Welcome to HOW IT WAS LIT, a new section on Prep To Post where I give you a lighting diagram and an explanation of how a certain shot was lit.

For these shots of Julie Mintz, I wanted to use a lighting scenario that would reflect the personality of her music. I decided it would be great to see her bathed in indirect light to give that sense of purity and innocence.

I have an all-white studio with a built-in cyc. It makes it pretty easy for me to (more…)

PHOTO LAB: BACKGROUND STAND USING C-STANDS

Posted by on Jun 16, 2011 in PHOTO LAB, TIPS & TUTORIALS | 0 comments

Sometimes it’s more work for me to dig out a background stand kit than it is to have a couple of C-Stands ready to go. In this tutorial, I show you how easy it is to set up a 9 foot roll of seamless background paper using two C-Stands with arms. The key is to leave the arm and grip head loose, to allow for movement.

PHOTO LAB: THE V-FLAT

Posted by on Jun 9, 2011 in PHOTO LAB, TIPS & TUTORIALS | 0 comments

Welcome to the PHOTO LAB, where I will be producing short tutorials on all things photography. This series will include tips and tricks for lighting, studio equipment, and grip.

Today we will put together a V-Flat, which is one of the most useful things to have in the studio. It is super easy to put together, using two 4’ x 8’ sheets of 3/16” foamcore. You can find foamcore at art supply warehouses, online, or in professional photo and theatrical supply outlets. You will also need gaffers tape, which you can find online or through photo and theatrical supply outlets.

Subscribe to the Prep To Post Vimeo Channel for updates on future PHOTO LAB tutorials.

FORMATTING THE EMAIL SIGNATURE

Now, if you are not using a signature at the bottom of every email you send out, you are failing. At the very least, you should have some sort of contact information such as your website address or cell phone number. It’s just good networking practice.

Ever since I got my EVO which runs on the Android OS, importing (more…)

WHAT’S IN A NAME?

Posted by on May 16, 2011 in BUSINESS TALK | 2 comments

I think one of the best things you can do for your photography career or business is to use your own name.

As photographers, we are artists and we are creative people. It’s natural to want to set ourselves apart and be unique in a creative way. We want to show everyone how creative we can be through the brand we make for ourselves. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen photographers use the words CREATIVE, DIGITAL, AND IMAGERY as a way of branding their business. Trust me, there is nothing more unoriginal than seeing Creative Digital Photography, or Digital Imaging Creations, and every other combination of those words.

Clients, Art Buyers, Art Directors, and other artists such as makeup and hair people want to work with YOU. They want to work with someone they can identify with as one person to another. It makes it difficult to get a sense of who you are as an artist when they need to replace your name with a fictitious one. (more…)
