I have been using SSD as a primary boot drive and a smaller SSD as a Photoshop scratch disk for over 2 years now and they have been working great and super fast in terms of productivity. You have to remember that most upper end SSD drives have a MTBF or time before failure of 2.5 Million hours.
Now if you ran it for 24 hours per day, 7 days per week you would put in about 8,736 hours per year for 286 years. Chances are you would upgrade the drive before it failed, also the newer SSD drives tend to be RAID friendly to stripe them and increase performance.
Now that being said, there is always a chance the drive could fail, just as with the older platter drives.
Either way they are worth every penny, and in case you’re wondering I’m using the OWC SSD drives which are made for Mac, but I also use the Kingston HyperX, which also works great.
